Developmental Math - Course Descriptions

(Please scroll for complete list.)

MATH 100- General Math

This course is designed to strengthen a student's computational skills.  Topics include operations with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percents, ratios and proportions, and their practical applications. Students learn to: (i) add, subtract, multiply, divide with whole numbers, fractions and decimals; (ii) solve problems involving percent; (iii) solve problems involving ratios and proportions; (iv) apply skills to solve simple application problems.  Eligible for "PR" grade. Prerequisite appropriate placement score. Offered:  Summer, Fall and Spring. 3 credits.

MATH 101 - Pre-Algebra

This course prepares students for algebra, business math or accounting.  Topics include a review of operations on fractions, decimals, ratios, proportions, percents, signed number operations, polynomials, American and metric measurements, elements of linear algebra and word problems, and use of the basic handheld  calculator. Students learn to: (i) add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions, decimals and integers; (ii) solve problems involving percent, ratios and proportions; (iii) solve equations using variables; (iv) use variables to translate and solve simple word problems; (v) add, subtract, multiply simple polynomials; (vi) find perimeter, area, volume in American and metric units; (vii) convert units in metric system. Eligible for "PR" grade.  Prerequisite:  MATH 100.  Offered:  Summer, Fall and Spring. 4 credits.

MATH 102 - Basic Algebra

This course is an introduction to the fundamental algebraic laws and concepts.   Topics include equations, inequalities, exponents, factoring, linear and quadratic equations, geometry, graphing, coordinate systems and other related topics. Students will learn to: (i) perform operations on mononomials and polynomials and evaluate them; (ii) perform operations on basic fractional expressions; (iii) solve systems of equations using addition, substitution, and graphing methods; (iv) solve quadratic equations using factoring; (v) solve inequalities and graph linear inequalities; (vi) apply these skills to solve application problems; (vii) factor polynomials; (viii) simplify radicals. Eligible for "PR" grade.  Prerequisite:  MATH 101 with a grade of B minus or higher, appropriate placement score, or with permission. Offered:  Summer, Fall and Spring. 4 credits.

MATH 102 - Basic Algebra- Section B1- SMART Classroom

This new section of MATH102 meets in a computer lab with a teaching method that uses internet technology. Customized computer-based assignments and electronic quizzes and exams are completed online, in the classroom. Offered: Occasionally. 4 credits.

MATH 102A - Basic Algebra-A

This first half of Math 102 introduces the fundamental algebraic laws and concepts.  Topics include linear equations, exponents, polynomials, factoring, geometry, and other related topics.  Prerequisite:  Math 101 with C or better.  Offered: Fall. 2 credits.

MATH 102B- Basic Algebra- B

This second half of Math 102 continues the study of the fundamental algebraic laws and concepts.  Topics include inequalities, quadratice equations, graphing/co-ordinate systems, and other related topics.  Prerequisite:  Math 102A with C or better.  Offered: Spring. 2 credits.
