ENGL 108- English Fundamentals
Students are introduced to basic grammar, punctuation and usage along with intensive work with the writing process: using prewriting, writing and revising techniques. Students will learn to: (i) demonstrate comprehension of a text through discussion and written reactions; (ii) write organized, well-developed paragraphs, memos, and essays for various audiences and purposes; (iii) understand and use techniques of the writing process- prewriting, drafting, and revising - for generating and structuring ideas; (iv) edit writing for correct grammar, usage, and punctuation; (v) evaluate peers' writing in terms of audience, focus, and organization; (vi) write a summary of a reading and a reaction to it. Prerequisite: ENGL 107 and READ 100L or appropriate placement score. Offered: Summer, Fall and Spring. 4 credits.
ENGL 109- English Review
Students review basic grammar, punctuation and syntax and practice writing well-developed essays, focusing on prewriting, drafting, revising and editing techniques. Students will learn to: (i) use freewriting techniques for reaction to readings and to generate and develop original ideas; (ii) demonstrate an understanding of a text's purpose and audience; (iii) write organized, well-developed essays, using critical thinking including analyzing, evaluating, synthesizing and problem-solving skills; (iv) revise essays in terms of content, focus, organization, and clarity of expression; (v) edit essays for correct grammar, usage, and punctuation; (vi) write summaries and reaction papers in response to college-level reading; (vii) write a paper (approximately 1000 words) using several sources of information and documentation; (viii) evaluate peers' writing in terms of content, focus, organization, and clarity of expression. Prerequisite: ENGL 108 and READ 101L or appropriate placement score. Offered: Summer, Fall and Spring. 4 credits.
ENGL 110L- Writing Lab
This individualized course helps students improve their writing skills through hands-on practice using word processing as a writing tool and frequent conferences with the instructor and/or tutors. Students practice generating, focusing and organizing ideas and will learn to: (i) use word processing effectively as a writing tool; (ii) write effective topic sentences and thesis statements; (iii) write an organized, well-developed essay including introductions, conclusion, support, and unity; (iv) demonstrate sensitivity to wordiness, word choice, awkwardness, levels of language such as slang/clichés and informal/formal discourse, and sentence structure; (v) use appropriate editing techniques to find and correct errors. Writing Lab should be taken concurrently with an English class. Graded as Pass/Fail. Prerequisite: ENGL 108 or appropriate placement score. Offered: Occasionally. 1 credit.
HUDV 117 - Writing and Editing
Participants work on strategies for producing more effective writing. Topics include revision techniques and review of basic punctuation rules. Offered: Occasionally. 1 credit.
HUDV 290 - Writing Creatively
This course develops students' creative-writing skills. Through fiction, students learn to develop characters, story lines, dialogue and points of view. Through poetry, they learn how to use imagery, sounds and forms. Graded as Pass/Fail. No prerequisite. Offered: Fall and Spring. 3 credits.
