2001. The Instructional Technology Center (ITC) opened, offering programs such as architectural drafting, computer science, and media arts, among many others.

20th Anniversary (2003). Legislators who helped establish the college were honored at SFCC's 20th anniversary celebration.

2005. The college begins looking into the development of sustainability technologies and the implementation of education and workforce training programs to support it.

September 2007. Voters approve a $25 million bond for the building of a new Health and Sciences Building and a Trades and Technology Center.

SFCC Biomass heating system

January 2008. A biomass heating system that meets 85% of the college's peak heating demand by burning wood chips acquired from forest-thinning projects is fired up for the first time.

President Sheila Ortego: "SFCC is now poised for world-class leadership to improve the environment. We are also working to reduce our own carbon footprint through recycling, low-consumption lighting and other conservation practices."

Groundbreaking for the new SFCC Health and Sciences building

January 15, 2009. Ground is broken for the new Health and Sciences Building. President Sheila Ortego: "This is the largest building project on campus in a decade and our first green building. We are very proud and thankful to the voters who approved bond funding to make this project a reality."

August 2010. 60% of Santa Fe voters approved a $35 million bond for SFCC, which includes $12 million to fund the construction of the Higher Education Center, which will allow Santa Fe area students to earn bachelors and master's degrees from three public universities without leaving Santa Fe. The bond request was endorsed by the City of Santa Fe, County of Santa Fe, Santa Fe Public Schools Board of Education, Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce, Santa Fe Association of Realtors and the Santa Fe Area Home Builders Association.

Trades and Advanced Tech bldg.

May 2011. The Trades & Advanced Technology Center was opened, featuring an array of green technology including solar photovoltaics for electricity, electronic sensors of faucets, skylights with fiberoptic tubes tha reflect and expand light distribution, and gray water storage for campus irrigation.

HEC logo.

August 2011. A pilot Higher Education Center was opened on the campus at SFCC. Partners University of New Mexico, the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) and NM Highlands University reported leaps in enrollment from the Santa Fe County area.

Present. SFCC now proudly offers more than 100 degrees and certificates- spanning everything from film crew training to dental assisting, arts and sciences to counseling. Each student has access to a first-class learning environment that includes modern classrooms, technologically cutting-edge labs and studios, and other highly specialized spaces.

The opening of the cutting-edge Trades and Advanced Technologies Center in 2011 represented the fulfillment of a long-time dream of former President Sheila Ortego. The scope of opportunities available at SFCC is unique within New Mexico—and it is ever-expanding.
